How Grid-Tied Solar Electric Works

1. Solar Modules
Solar electric modules convert sunlight into DC power.
2. Inverter
DC power is sent to a device called an inverter which transforms DC power to AC power, identical to the power you receive from the utility grid.
3. Electrical Panel
Power travels from the inverter to your electrical service panel (your breaker box). The power from the electrical panel is distributed to the electrical loads in your home.
4. Net Metering
In the event that your solar electric system produces more power than is being consumed, the excess power flows into the utility grid through your electric meter.
5. Utility Grid
The utility company manages an AC power distribution system to deliver electricity to their customers.
Battery Back-up
Some clients elect to integrate a battery bank with their grid-tied system to power backup loads in the event of a utility outage.
