Solar really has come a long way since its early beginnings powering satellites in the US Space program. The U.S. now has over 7,700 MW of installed solar electric capacity, enough to power more than 1.2 million American households. In 2012 eleven US states installed 50 MW or more and over 82,000 homes installed solar across the country.
But, there are still some misconceptions about Solar PV, and today we would like to put some of these anti-solar ideas to bed…once and for all!
Misconception Number 1: Solar PV is Unreliable.
Despite some of the misrepresentations you have seen in the press, Solar PV panels are reliable. However, they are not all created equal and like most things – you get what you pay for. When considering solar its important to work with a reputable company that will only sell solar panels that have been manufactured to the highest of standards by manufacturing companies that have solid warranties and insurance to back up their products
Misconception Number 2: Solar Panels are Ugly
Power plants are ugly, coal mines are ugly, solar panels…well I guess it’s a matter of opinion but nowadays there are options to purchase all black panels with black frames and black back sheets so there is none of the black and white patchwork look associated with early modules. We can’t tell you what to think, but if you check out some of the lovely solar installations featured , we think you will agree that we are beyond the solar is ugly accusation.
Misconception Number 3: Solar Electric Systems are Expensive
While the energy supply from the Sun is infinitely free it is true that the equipment needed to convert that energy into electricity for your home can cost a buck or two. Luckily there are some great options on loans and leases to help you over come the high up front cost of solar ownership and start saving on your electricity bills. Your solar consultant should be able to demonstrate that, by fixing the cost of your electricity, you are making a financially sound investment.
Misconception Number 4: Solar PV requires a lot of Maintenance.
Actually, that’s nonsense. Grid tied solar PV requires very little maintenance. There are no moving parts and system components are warranted to last for a very long time. A reputable installation company will warrant the installation for at least 5 years and will come check on your system annually to ensure it is performing to expectation.
These are just a few of the common accusations from the anti-solar lobby but there are certainly more so feel free to throw some other common misconceptions our way. We’d love to hear what you think.
